The Cotton Room is an all-inclusive wedding venue and event space featuring timeless architecture, innovative cuisine, expert planning, and inspired events. However, the space is more than just an event venue: it’s a sign of hometown pride. For business owners Dodd and Michelle Aldred, coming back to Durham to open the Cotton Room was always an important ambition.
Michelle, a Durham native, knew from the moment she visited Golden Belt’s campus that there was an amazing opportunity to pay homage to Durham’s history, preserve its unique architecture, and help revitalize a structure that was once part of the heartbeat of the city’s downtown area. The results of the Golden Belt restoration effort which began in 2007 are a stylish yet historic location which includes apartments and lofts, offices, retail spaces and restaurants, and event space.
The Cotton Room is located in the newly renovated Golden Belt campus, the first gold-certified LEED historic site in the Southeast. The Golden Belt Manufacturing Company boasts a long, notable history. Founded by Julian Shakespeare Carr in 1900 The Cotton Room was originally a textile factory which primarily produced cotton pouches for Bull Durham Tobacco.
